HYPERBARIC CHAMBER FACTS
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is an evidence-based medical treatment demonstrated to speed up healing and reduce the severity of wounds and infections in less time – among patients who complete the treatment recommended by their physicians, the rate of healing ranges is greater than 85 percent.
It is a medical treatment where the patient breathes 100% oxygen under pressure in a pressurized chamber. We normally only breathe 21% oxygen in our atmosphere. The oxygen is pushed into the plasma, lymphatics, distal tissue, and it creates the bodies capabilities to create angiogenesis which is the formation of new blood vessels which in turn bring more blood and healing factors to an idea that is hypoxic which has miraculous effects on healing.
HBOT is used to treat many different health conditions including:
- Post-surgery wounds
- Injury from crushing
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Cyanide poisoning
- Gas gangrene, a form of gangrene in which gas collects in tissues
- Decompression sickness
- Sudden or traumatic inadequate blood flow in the arteries
- Select wound healing
- Skin grafts and flaps
- Infection in a bone called osteomyelitis
- Delayed radiation injury
- Flesh-eating disease called necrotizing bacterial soft tissue infections
- Air or gas bubble trapped in a blood vessel. This is known as an air or gas embolism.
- Long-term (chronic) infection called actinomycosis
- Diabetic wounds that are not healing properly
A new study indicates that hyperbaric oxygen treatments (HBOT) in healthy aging adults can stop the aging of blood cells and reverse the aging process. In the biological sense, the adults’ blood cells actually grow younger as the treatments progress.
Hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy sessions last one to two hours and are generally scheduled once a day, five days a week. Your doctor may prescribe 30 or more treatments before the therapy is complete. How many treatments you have is often dependent on how quickly your condition improves.
Should I sleep in a hyperbaric chamber? No, you don’t have to spend a full night sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber. Some athletes and celebrities have reported sleeping full nights in a hyperbaric chamber. But to see the benefits of HBO therapy, you only need around 2 hours at an absolute atmosphere (ATA) of 1.5 to 3.
Generally, though, anyone who needs oxygen treatment should consider committing to at least a couple of sessions per week as a bare minimum. Many patients see great results with one treatment per day for five days, up to 20-40 treatments total.

HBOT preventing and reducing injury
The potential benefits for sports injuries appear to be a blunting of initial injury, possibly by controlling the neutrophil adhesion and release of oxygen free radicals as well as an enhancement of healing processes requiring oxygen-like collagen formation phagocytosis.

HBOT and the immune system. There is some modern thought that the satellite cell activation is going to be key to understand many of HBOT effects. There are many preventative effects of HBOT listed in manuscript.

HBOT and muscle recovery
When you work out, your muscles become deoxygenated and fill with lactic acid. Because HBOT helps your blood carry higher levels of oxygen to your muscles, they can return to full strength faster—which proves useful to those who want to recover quickly and maximize performance.

Reduction of Bruising

In conclusion, hyperbaric oxygen treatment increases the myoblast growth rate and myogenin and actin production. Better histologic and physiologic performance were found after hyperbaric oxygen treatment in animal contusion model.

Crush Injury Treatment
HBO2 is woefully neglected as an adjunct for managing crush injury and SMCS. Strong arguments exist for its use based on evidenced-based information and how HBO2 mitigates the pathology of these conditions.
